| December 19, 2006 Issue #35
Welcome to the newsletter where playing more and stressing less is taken seriously. It's written with the intention to support you in living a life with more passion and play and less worry and work.IN THIS ISSUE... How Slow Can You Go? 2007...Here I Come Enigma's New C.D. One - The Movie Fruitcake Funnies Ways to Play Today: A Long Holiday Walk Take and Actually Develop Your Photos Something to Ponder: What's your perspective on the passing of time? "We all start out in life with one thing in common; we all have the same amount of time. It's just a matter of what we do with it." ~Harvey B. McKay My Playground The article, the message, the thing to make you go hmmm... ~How Slow Can You Go~ Last week my husband took me out to dinner for my birthday. We went to a restaurant where it's not just the food that leaves you spellbound, but it's the time in which it takes to consume and appreciate this exquisite dining experience. There are only ten tables and one seating per evening. Our meal consisted of seven courses and was served to us by four people. Our eating extravaganza lasted three and a half hours! Normally, we can suck down dinner in ten minutes flat. The time it usually takes us to fix, eat and clean up our evening meal was the same amount of time it took for our first two courses to be served. The meal left our bellies bursting, but what really left us feeling incredibly full was time appeared to have been altered. I wouldn't want to have a three and a half hour dinner every night, but I certainly appreciated the sense that time seemed to slow down during one of the busiest months of the year.
The month of December always seems to pass by more quickly than any other on the calendar. Despite my best efforts to not get caught up in the frenetic pace of the holiday season, I find myself seduced by the swirl of speed. There's the shopping and the parties, the endless to-do lists and the end-of-the-year "What will I do next year?" lists. I'll admit I get excited by all the activities, but being buzzed by the speed of time can be utterly exhausting. By the time the 31st arrives, it's no wonder I feel like I'm due for a vacation. I've worn myself out trying to squeeze in as many things as I can not only within a 24 hour period, but before the year comes to an end. If you ever feel like you're the Energizer Bunny on drugs this time of year, you'll appreciate what I'm about to say next. ![]() I slowed down the other day and took the time to watch this sunset.
The last thirty-one days of the year are no different than the first thirty-one or the thirty-one days that happen in the months of March, May, July, August and October. What makes December's thirty-one days appear to zoom on by is our reluctance to surrender to all things slow. Think about this for a moment...How often do you appreciate being stuck in traffic or a long line at the grocery store? Do you always take a full hour for lunch? Do you sit around the dining room table every night and have a sit-down dinner with your spouse and/or family? Modern technology provides us some pretty spectacular things such as quick meals via the microwave and communication-to-go via cellular phones, but these inventions weren't created in the interest of slowing things down, but to speed them up. We are a world hooked on quicker, better and easier and although it's easy to point the finger at the media for hyping us up around the holidays, the only person we can blame for the speed of our lives is ourselves. I really like this month's quote because it's so darn true. "We all have the same amount of time. It's just a matter of what we do with it." A new friend of mine, Matthew Scott recently shared with me another way to look at time. He said, "We all have one year left to live. We just don't know when that year begins." Wow. That certainly slowed me down quite a bit. Time will pass by slow or fast depending on your perspective. How do you want to experience time? If life feels like a rocket ship, remember that you're the one fueling the tank and no one says you have to explore the entire galaxy in a day. Consider being a row boat for the remainder of the year. If you're a speed demon like me, it may seem too slow of a ride at first, but you've got two oars if you feel the need to speed things up. For the rest of this month, I'd just like to float and notice the ripples. I encourage you to do the same. There will be plenty of time to paddle in the New Year. Personal Recommendations for books, music, websites and all resources fun! One - The Movie Four and a half years ago, an attorney from Detroit, Michigan wakes up from a dream that tells him to make an independent film about oneness. Not quite sure what to make of this early morning revelation, he decides it's important enough of an idea to explore and embarks on an incredible journey that takes him and a couple of companions around the United States. They meet with inspirational leaders, spiritual masters and well-known authors to discuss some of life's biggest questions like "What is the meaning of life?", "Why are we here?" and "What happens when we die?" and film their responses. Even though I have yet to see the film, I'm recommending you pay the website a visit and watch the trailers as they pack a powerful punch. The concept of "We are all one" certainly isn't a new idea, but the fact that this man was inspired to make a film when he didn't have a clue how to go about doing it and then went ahead and did it anyway, is truly inspiring. If there are any readers in the Portland, Oregon area who are interested in helping to host a film, let me know. It's something I'd like to do and I can't do it alone. Enigma - "A Posteriori" A short and quick music recommendation as there's not much to say especially if you're already a fan of this enchanting, ambient mood-master. Michael Cretu's sixth album contains familiar musical strains as well as a wee bit of the chanting that he's become known for. Even though many of the songs sound like the ones I've heard on his previous albums, I love them just the same. The c.d. is perfect for ecstatic dance and isn't a bad choice for make-out music as well. If you're just hearing about Engima for the first time, I bet that last sentence makes you curious enough to go have a listen. You won't be disappointed. What's Up at Playful Spirit? I offer my apologies for getting this issue out a day later than planned. Honestly, I gave myself permission to be a day late so that I could spend a few hours walking on the beach instead of writing. It was good for my soul, but it did get in the way of publishing my newsletter on time yesterday. Sorry 'bout that. Onward and forward...
I mentioned in last month's newsletter that I wasn't sleeping much. I'm working on getting more shut-eye, but until I find a sleep solution I'm making the best use of the creative energy running about my head in the early morning hours. Eight hours of sleep is a good thing, but a great idea is even better and I've had lots of them lately. Even though they tend to keep me up at night, I'm grateful for all the juiciness that's been coursing through my veins. The challenging part to all of my passionate pondering has been trying to figure out which idea(s) to focus on first. Here's what I've decided (so far!) to pay attention to and develop in 2007:
My speaking presence. I want to walk my talk of playing big by getting out and about more and making myself known as a motivational speaker and facilitator. That means more workshops and retreats, more networking online and in person and more public speaking events. It's about time to add an Events & Happenings page to my website as well as a Favorite Links. I'll keep you informed of their debut to happen in the first part of the New Year.
My community. I am in final negotiations to write a regular bi-monthly column for the local newspaper where I live part-time. I'm ready to step up and be more connected to and contribute to the community in which I call home. It's a small town with big politics sometime, but I will not let that stop me from writing about the concerns and interests of the people who live here. My friend Karen reminded me the other day of a powerful statement that was written on a card I gave her recently which said, "I am not afraid. I was born to do this." Thanks, Karen and thank you to Joan of Arc as well. Last, but certainly not least (and on a non-business note) I am paying more attention to my family. Two days ago I made a commitment to my sister to visit her once a month. Thank you, Shannon for speaking your truths to me. I promise I will not fail in my commitment to you. Tonight as I was writing this newsletter, I received a phone call from my mom telling me a family member died. Extremely sad and very shocking news and here I sit, alone in front of my computer, wishing I were in the arms of my loved ones and able to to comfort my cousin who has lost his father. I spoke earlier in this newsletter of the perspective of time and the importance of slowing down. Right now all I can think of is Saturday afternoon which is the next time I'll see my family and wanting this week to pass by quickly. Sigh... Giggles & Guffaws An amusing story, joke, anecdote or picture to tickle your funnybone I spent way too much time searching the internet for some funny Christmas stories and sadly, this is one of the cleanest I came up with that gave me a few chuckles. There were actually 20 uses for Fruitcake and I narrowed it down to what I felt were the funniest (and most practical) five.
1. Use it to clean your pots and pans.
Ways to Play Today Why not...take a long walk after your holiday meal? Many of us tend to overindulge during the holidays when it comes to eating. Any extra exercise you do is a sure way to offset the extra calories you may consume. Before you get too cozy on that couch or big chair, encourage everyone at your family gathering to get off their duffs, bundle up (or break out the shorts and sunglasses if you live in the Southern Hemisphere) and head outdoors for some fresh air and a bit of a workout. Be prepared to hear moans and groans from your loved ones, but do not be deterred. Insist that those who join you will not only feel better after the walk, but there's a good chance they'll escape having to clean up and do the dishes. Sneaky, eh? Why not...take pictures and actually develop them? Digital cameras are great, but the majority of the pictures I've taken over the last three years are on my computer rather in a photo album. Gone are the days of rushing to the developer and waiting at least a good hour to see your prints. You know what the picture looks like immediately after you take it. This isn't a bad thing, but it does tend to diminish the likelihood of whether or not you'll have it printed. Play photographer at your holiday celebration and then surprise your family and friends by sending them photos of the event. One of the gifts of capturing a moment on film is sharing it with others. Print and pass on. Something to Ponder Questions designed to stimulate your thinking AND encourage you to take action towards what you want.
When does time seem to slow down for you? If you want to find out more about the work I do as a facilitator, writer and inspirational speaker check out Playful Spirit. Make sure you come back and visit every so often as you never know what kind of resources and fun stuff I'll be playing around with and adding to the website. Thanks for reading this issue of Lighten Up! If you enjoyed it, please pass it along to your friends, your family, your co-workers...You get the idea. For the next month, find ways how you can alter your sense of time and slow your life's pace down a bit. See you on January 15th! Lisa
