~On Being Silent~

After a three month sabbatical from writing my newsletter, I'm pleased to announce the return of Lighten Up! The 90 day break wasn't a planned one, but apparently it was what I needed. Apparently I needed a major time-out in order to really tune in. Just when I thought I had myself all figured out, life surprised me with a question I'd been ignoring the answer to. When I wrote my last issue back at the beginning of May, I was pretty pumped up about pursuing big and bold ideas. I'm still all gung-ho for going after your dreams, but something in me has shifted in the last few months and it just didn't feel quite right to share it until now.

The question that came up for me was this, "How do I surrender to my deepest desire right now?" Or put another way, "How do I allow myself to have what I really want in this moment?" Tackling daily to-do lists and planning for what's next had kept my brain busy and my body active, but it had slowly and subtly stripped me of an exquisite joy that many us in this fast-paced, noisy world of ours too easily forget about...the beauty of being silent. We're surrounded by sounds and sometimes the loudest is the one that resides within each of us. No matter what you call it (the ego, your inner conscience, that still small voice) it's forever saying something, isn't it?

As an extrovert who has always derived substantial pleasure from talking, it's only been within the last few years I've learned the wisdom of speaking less and listening more. So while I've been successful in closing my mouth, I've struggled with quieting my mind. Ever wish you could just tell that voice inside your head to just "shut the hell up" for awhile so you could really hear yourself? Ever consider what the voice would tell you if no words were spoken? For me, being silent has been about getting in touch with how I feel and making decisions from that place instead of relying on words like "should" and "have to" to influence what I do.

5 Ways to Express Your Voice without Words

1) Dance.

2) Collage.

3) Paint or draw.

4) Make love.

5) Listen.

Of course it's not always feasible to do whatever it is we feel like doing and have exactly what we want from one moment to the next, but (and this is a big but) we always have the ability to check in and ask ourselves "What's true for me at this time?" You might not always like the answer you hear, but if you're listening beyond the words the silence has important things to teach you.

One of the things that's been true for me about being silent with my writing the past three months is this...it's allowed me to be fully present to the events and experiences of my life as they were occurring. I've been a full-on participant feeling my way through both the magic and the muck instead of being a spectator thinking about how I might capture and express each moment with words. It's been equally enlightening and excruciating and it's been incredibly freeing. What might that voice of yours with no words be ready and willing to tell you? If you can be with the silence long enough, it's likely you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you hear. Listen.

Personal Recommendations for books, music, websites and all resources fun!

Northwest Women's Surf Camps
Feel joy, fun and liberation while learning to surf in the stunning beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Face your fears in the company of supportive coaches and surfing girls. Find serenity amongst the waves. If you're a woman who's always wanted to learn how to surf, but has been reluctant to ride the waves, hesitate no longer! A few months ago, I met an amazing woman named Lexie Hallahan who's been offering surfing camps and retreats for women for the past three years along the Oregon coast. Her August retreat in Seaside is just two weeks away and she still has a few spots available! I'll be one of those women who will dress up like a seal, learn how to get up on a board and hopefully (finally!) conquer my fear of being out in big water. In addition to being a participant, I'll be serving as the retreat's life coach for the week as well as facilitating an ecstatic dance on the beach one evening. If you'd like to attend, check out Lexie's website and give her a call a.s.a.p. If you can't make this one, consider attending her retreat in beautiful Hanalei, Kauai next April. I'll be attending that one, too!

Randy Pausch Silent Tribute and Talking Tribute
"What wisdom would you impart to the world if you knew it was your last chance?" Randy was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September 2006 and told by doctors in August 2007 that he only had 3-6 months left to live. A month later, Randy gave a talk entitled "The Last Lecture" that has been seen by millions of people on the internet. He recently passed away and these two short videos are tributes to a life well-lived in only forty-seven years. Watch them and then be sure to Google "The Last Lecture" and watch Randy's inspirational presentation.

What's Up at Playful Spirit?

While I've been quiet on the writing-front for awhile, I've been living out loud in other areas of my life for the past three months. My adventures and travels have taken me to places I'll be sharing with you via my newsletter and blog posts for months to come. I'm both excited and nervous about returning to written word. The silence has been a blessing and it's time to welcome back and embrace my writing muse.

The month of June was dedicated to the launching of Beach Dance. Fifteen dancers congregated on the shores of Cannon Beach and while photographs and film footage was taken, we danced together in the sand, surf and a bit of sun. It was an incredible shared experience of music and movement in nature. There have already been six events this summer and there are several more this month and next. Check out the remaining dates and come to Cannon Beach for some beach dancing fun.

July had me traveling here and there and everywhere. I spent the Fourth of July weekend in Stockbridge, Massachusetts at Kripalu where I had the honor and pleasure of being Jennifer Louden's assistant at her Luscious and Creative Women's Retreat.

Next on the travel itinerary was to have been a week at Esalen but unfortunately, plans were changed at the last minute due to the terrible fires in Big Sur, California. Rather than scrap my vacation, I rented a small studio in Sausalito with my friend and business partner, Elia Seely and together, we created a dancing retreat of our own. We attended a variety of free-form dancing events throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and had the opportunity to meet several amazing folks who are making a huge difference in the realm of dance and play. We became big fans of a yummy restaurant and instant friends with Conscious Dancer magazine founders, Aspen and Mark. In fact, Elia and I will have an article about our California dancing adventures in an upcoming issue of the magazine. Very cool dance connections are being made all over the place.

If everything about the Playful Spirit seems to be about dance these days that's because it is. The space has been found and lease papers are about to be signed! I'm over-the-top excited to tell you that Tsunami Studio, an expressive arts and movement space will be opening this fall in Astoria, Oregon. Dedicated to free-form dance and other creative endeavors, Tsunami aspires to be the place along the Oregon coast where hanging out and having fun is to be had in big ways. Weekly dance classes, art workshops and weekend retreats are just some of the yummy things planned to offer inspiration, personal growth and entertainment to Oregon coast residents and visitors. We've got our sights on a grand opening happening the beginning of October. Stay tuned for more delicious dancing details soon!

An amusing story, joke, anecdote or picture to tickle your funnybone

I've provided a link in a previous newsletter to this guy's website and after seeing his new video of his latest adventures, it's worth having another look. His silly dance will put a smile on your face and just might inspire you to get outdoors and create your own ridiculous rhythm to music. Matt's Back.

Ways to Play Today

Why not...prepare and eat a meal in silence with others?
Take food preparation and consumption to new levels of fun and intimacy with your family and friends by making and munching your way quietly through a meal. When your focus is on the cuisine instead of the conversation, it's not uncommon to be surprised by the tastes and textures on your plate. Not only will the silence cause you to eat slower, you'll be amazed and amused by how loud chewing and swallowing your food can be. Of course you and your dining companions might burst into giggles upon hearing those sounds in your head, but let laughter be the only thing that breaks the silence.

Why not...take a ten-minute nap when you need it most?
You know what it's like to try and stay awake when you're tired. You shut one eye while keeping the other open and then you switch. Your head slowly tilts south towards your toes then suddenly snaps upright again. You can't stop yawning no matter how hard you try to stop it. These are all sure signs you need a nap. Narcoleptics aren't the only ones who experience excessive daytime sleepiness. It's usually soon after lunch time when we feel drowsiness settling in and many of us struggle to stay upright and alert. Rather than fighting off the temptation to snooze, give in to nodding off for a few minutes of needed rest. Set your timer for ten minutes and relax. Happy napping!

Something to Ponder
Questions designed to stimulate your thinking AND encourage you to take action towards what you want.

How might words limit your ability to listen to what's most important to you?

What do you think being silent for awhile would give you?

Care to share what these questions stir up in you?

Send me an e-mail. I welcome your thoughts and will respond to all e-mails received.

If you want to find out more about the work I do as a facilitator, writer and movement artist check out Playful Spirit Productions. Make sure you come back and visit every so often as you never know what kind of resources and fun stuff I'll be playing around with and adding to the website.

Thanks for reading this issue of Lighten Up! If you enjoyed it, please pass it along to your friends, your family, your co-workers...You get the idea. May you have the courage to take time out for yourself and trust that the silence you experience will give you exactly what you need. Enjoy the rest of your August. See you September 1st!

Cheers,
Lisa
