Lighten Up!, Issue #050-Ideas Too Big to Contain May 01, 2008 |
| May 1, 2008 Issue #50
Welcome to the newsletter where playing more and stressing less is taken seriously. It's written with the intention to support you in living a life with more passion and play and less worry and work.IN THIS ISSUE... Ideas Too Big to Contain Great Ads & Grand Talks Beach Dance Hmmm...Chocolate "I'm here to sing." Ways to Play Today: A Different Kind of Game Suds Up at Sun Up Something to Ponder: How do you keep your big idea contained? "For self is a sea boundless and measureless." ~Kahlil Gibran My Playground The article, the message, the thing to make you go hmmm... ~Ideas Too Big to Contain~ Ever have a thought or an idea that was so big and bold that it made you wonder if you were really the one responsible for it? I believe we're completely capable of creating outrageously grand things all by ourselves, but I also have come to believe that some ideas are not-so-secretly supported by the divine. In last month's newsletter, I talked about the importance of becoming aware of and paying attention to signs from the Universe. Might it be possible that our biggest and best ideas are created from a source of wisdom that's beyond our general understanding? Think about this for a second...you KNOW when something feels right and true for you, yes? You KNOW when an idea of yours is outrageously out-of-this-world when it keeps you up at night and won't leave you alone. It's likely you probably also know when it's time to start something and when it's time to bring it to an end. Here's the rub though...knowing doesn't make our ideas and dreams come true. It's DOING them! We are idea-generating geniuses, but if we never take steps to make them manifest they'll not only stay in our heads they carry the potential to break our hearts. I say all this to preface a grand idea of mine I'm about to share with you. For the past few months, I've been asking myself deep questions most specifically around my work. In my previous two newsletters, I described it as "the something else" that had yet to make an appearance. The truth is...I've known what it's been for quite awhile AND I allowed my fears to almost talk me out of pursuing my too-big-to-contain idea. My heart has broken plenty of times over boys, but never over big dreams given up. I'm not going to let that happen and neither should you. Whatever spectacularly large and lovely idea you have was created BY you FOR you. Get it? However it was you generated that idea in the first place doesn't matter. What matters is what you are going to do with it.
After dancing solo on the beach for the past seven years, it's time to let others in on the fun and joy. I've been inspiring others to move and be moved by their own authentic expressions inside contained spaces and it's time now for a serious expansion. Beach dance is coming to Cannon Beach this summer and perhaps soon to a beach near you. Yep, I'm going to facilitate free-form dance events on the beach and I just KNOW it will offer a sea of boundless and measureless experiences to all those who take part in it.
Personal Recommendations for books, music, websites and all resources fun! Obama in 30 Seconds Whether or not you're going to vote for Barack Obama, I encourage you to check out what happens when you give people the opportunity to express their political opinions through creative means. A contest sponsored by Moveon.org to promote Obama's presidential campaign inspired thousands of folks to create their own thirty second ad. The fifteen finalists have been chosen and they are an impressive lot. View them and vote on your favorite. No matter what your political affiliation may be, these half-a-minute ads will make you feel something. Maybe you'll be moved to tears or you'll laugh out loud. My hope is you'll be touched in some way by these big ideas that were brought to life by being inspired. TED Ted began as a small conference back in 1984 and has since evolved into an organization and online community that believes in the power of promoting ideas to effect change. 'Ideas worth spreading' is their motto and mission and they do it in part by making available to the public videos of the best short talks and performances that are given each year at their conference. While the majority of the speakers are successful and well-known in their respective fields, there are some people who take the stage with a big idea yet to be born. I've only watched but a handful of the videos and while some of the talks were a bit dull, there were others that were absolutely fascinating. Explore for yourself what innovative thinkers and dreamers are saying and doing. What's Up at Playful Spirit? Happy May Day! A celebration of many sorts will occur today depending on where you live in the world. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, I'll be jumping up and down rejoicing in the fact that the winter half of the year has ended. I don't care what the weather plans on doing, but I plan on getting outside today and frolicking about before heading inside in the evening to dance. For the past couple of months our regular venue for our dance class has been unavailable so we've been making the best of our temporary space. Despite the low number of participants recently, I'm more committed than ever to bringing ongoing and special dance events to the area in which I live. The dance space I mentioned in last month's newsletter mysteriously fell through and so my business partner and I will be in the hunt again for a new place. There is a space that will soon begin its transformation from an ugly unfinished basement to a magical movement studio, but that's a story to share with you at another time. It's good to add a little suspense and spice from time to time to keep you excited about what news next month's newsletter will bring you. Stay tuned for the delicious debut of "The Playhouse." I'm still putting together all the details about beach dancing before posting them online, but I'll give you a heads-up on how it will play out. First, let me tell you about the cool things it won't be. It won't cause a disturbance to the peace or bother other people on the beach because only those who are dancing will hear the music. It won't be a choreographed, instruction-based class because authentic expression can't be contained or constrained by a set of rules. It won't be for everyone because there are some folks that just aren't ready for this kind of experience and I'm okay with that. Yes, I want as many people to come out and explore their dance in a safe, yet uncontained space on the beach AND I know that right now playing big means keeping class sizes small. I envision the day when hundreds of people are dancing along the ocean shore and oh, what a grand day that will be! Until then, I know this big idea of mine will need time to catch fire with folks before it will grow exponentially. I wholeheartedly welcome my readers not only to come to Cannon Beach and dance, but to spread the idea to others. I've purchased fifteen iPod Nanos and I'm synching the same play lists to every one of them. Each participant will listen to the same music while being able to explore their own unique dance. We'll be dancing together in relatively the same area of the beach, but when you're on the world's largest outdoor dance floor (a clever marketing message, don't you think?) dancers are free to roam to the place on the beach where their body wants to go. There's more to share and all of it will soon be available on my website. Speaking of which...my online presence is currently undergoing a rewrite and redesign. There are more changes to come, but some major ones can already be seen.

and let me know what you think of its new look. Last, but certainly not least, I have to brag about an eating event that my husband and I and two of our friends recently took part in. A few months back, we bid on and won an item at an auction that would make every child green with envy. The four of us had an all-you-can-eat thirty minute candy fest at our local shop of sweets. Fortunately this took place after hours as I'm sure the sight of four grown-ups stuffing their faces with sugary treats wasn't a very pretty one. We skipped on the Swedish fish and Jelly Bellies and dove straight into the more expensive and yummier chocolate confections. What we couldn't eat, we each could fill up a small bag to take home with us. Initially, we thought the bags were small, but once we got home and laid out our hauls on the kitchen table, we were amazed by how much we made out with. We had a blast, but we paid the consequences of our actions later that night. Despite the aches and pains of our bloated bellies, we still had smiles on our faces. Willy Wonka would have been proud that night.
Giggles & Guffaws An amusing story, joke, anecdote or picture to tickle your funnybone The U.K. has a television show similar to American Idol called "Britain's Got Talent". No sh*@! A man by the name of Paul Potts surprised the heck out of Simon Cowell and his fellow judges when he sung opera for them last year. This is another surprising performance from a young man whose big dream is to sing. Giggles of extreme joy and delight are likely to follow your tears after watching this. Dream on and dream big! They really do come true. Ways to Play Today Why not...play a game you used to play with a new twist? Whether you're a board game guru, a card-wielding wizard or a master of imaginative amusements, gather up your game-playing friends and have yourselves an evening of friendly competition and camaraderie. You may not think you're bound for fun when you break out the Monopoly or Scrabble board and maybe the sound of "Go Fish" already has you yawning with boredom, but wait...the point is not to play the game the way you used to, but to make up new rules for an old game. Give this delightful and somewhat devilish dare a try and I promise you'll never want to play by the original set of rules again. For example, move the decimal point over two places and substitute real money for your Boardwalk-buying transactions and see how that stirs people up. Boardwalk for $4.00 instead of $400 is a steal! How about replacing "Go Fish" with a different and perhaps somewhat naughtier expression? I'll refrain from giving you my mischievous suggestions and trust you'll be able to conjure up some wickedly good lines yourself. Why not...take a bath to begin your day? If a cup of coffee and a five-minute shower is your normal morning routine, it's time to get up a little earlier so you can get in the tub. Spoiling yourself with a sudsy soak at the beginning of the day will not only relax you, but will remind you to slow down and take extra care of yourself for the rest of the day. Baths are especially good when you're feeling a bit anxious about the day ahead. Save the magazines, music and mood lighting for bedtime baths and reserve morning time in the tub for bubbles, breathing slowly and basking in the beauty of your extended water wake-up session. Something to Ponder Questions designed to stimulate your thinking AND encourage you to take action towards what you want. How long have you been thinking about your big idea? What is the next step you can take towards making it a reality? Care to share what these questions stir up in you? If you want to find out more about the work I do as a facilitator, writer and movement artist check out Playful Spirit Productions. Make sure you come back and visit every so often as you never know what kind of resources and fun stuff I'll be playing around with and adding to the website. Thanks for reading this issue of Lighten Up! If you enjoyed it, please pass it along to your friends, your family, your co-workers...You get the idea. May you trust yourself enough to know that your grand ideas are much bigger than any of your fears and may you do what's needed next to bring those ideas out of your head and into the world. See you on or about May 19th! Lisa ~Playful Spirit Productions' mission is to inspire people to show up, be real and play big in life.~ lisa@playful-spirit.com www.playful-spirit.com |
