Welcome to the newsletter where playing more and stressing less is taken seriously. It's written with the intention to support you in living a life with more passion and play and less worry and work.IN THIS ISSUE... The Importance of Being Vulnerable Yummylicious Dance Momentum New Blog Debuts & Beach Retreat is happening in January Twister Anyone? Ways to Play Today: Watch Mother Nature Move Your Body Differently Something to Ponder: How Vulnerable Are You, Really? "And the day came when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it was to bloom ." ~Anais Nin My Playground The article, the message, the thing to make you go hmmm... ~The Importance of Being Vulnerable~ Since my last newsletter in June, I've traveled to St. Louis, Japan, New Mexico and Seattle. I spent one week being a camp counselor and two weeks being a dance facilitator. I've moved my home in Oregon from Portland to Cannon Beach and I've moved many folks to express themselves in authentic and honest ways. I've had a large, unexpected check arrive in the mail and I've had my purse stolen. It's been a wild and wonderful time and perhaps it's because of those reasons and a few more unnamed ones that made me take a break from my newsletter last month. Or perhaps it's something else I've been thinking about and feeling lately that gave me permission to take a month-long vacation from my vocation.
I think there's a big difference between being naïve and being vulnerable. When we're young and inexperienced, being naïve is a given and is usually forgiven. Until we've lived a couple decades and learned a few life lessons, our childish and somewhat irresponsible ways are seen as a natural part of growing up. Our parents, teachers and other adult mentors will usually understand and excuse our lapses in judgment knowing full well they were once stumbling and bumbling their way through adolescence and early adulthood. The truth is...maturity and responsibility don't necessarily come with getting older. It's more the hard-knocks, the broken hearts and the mistakes we make throughout our lives that teach us how to be aware and astute. You may be a legal adult at age 18, but an official badge for being a grown-up doesn't exist. Wisdom is derived from experience and fortunately, life doesn't put a cap on how many opportunities are given to us to become wiser. ![]()
So in the interest (and importance) of being vulnerable, I've been asking myself some questions of late and they're ones I'd ask you to consider as well - How can you be more open and honest with yourself and with others? What is significant enough in your life that you'd be willing to take a risk to find out how grand an idea of yours could possibly be? What is it that keeps you up at night and whispers gently, but consistently, "Do it now."? And last, but not least...how painful will it have to get before you take action around something you just know is meant for you to do? Still need to be convinced of the benefits of being vulnerable? Read on... Traveling for six weeks this summer gave me plenty of opportunities to be vulnerable. I think back to the two weeks I spent in Japan and had I not 'put myself out there' I may not have enjoyed my trip as much. It certainly was frustrating at times being a foreigner, but I tell you, it was a lot more fun (and funny) to be different and misunderstood than to just be frustrated. For me, being vulnerable isn't a once-in-a-while thing. It's my standard way of being. I know it's the way in which I'll continually grow and I know it's one of the ways in which I inspire others. Remain tight in the bud no longer. I challenge you not to wait until spring to bloom. That day is here now. Open up.
Personal Recommendations for books, music, websites and all resources fun! Yummylicious Welcome to my new blog! A big thank you to my subscriber, Jessica Albon, who helped me create my latest online writing adventure. Jessica was my technical guru and creative advisor and without her support, Yummylicious would still be just an idea in my head. I'm happy to share with you the beginning of the big vision I have to build an online community of all things ecstatic. The idea for creating this kind of community came to me earlier this year when I was in Hawaii. My first post describes the ecstatic experience that led me to bring Yummylicious to life. I'm still in the process of adding content and links so if you have a story to tell or suggestions on what might be a yummy resource, send me an email and share. Dance Momentum I thought I'd share one of the yummy resources you'll find on my new blog mentioned above. Dance Momentum is a free-form dance community in Portland, Oregon that I've been a part of for the last eight years. Four amazing facilitators host a variety of dance classes and workshops each month in different venues. If you love to dance but you hate getting your groove on in smoky bars with bad music, there are a couple special events in the next few weeks you might be interested in attending. The second annual Be the Light is happening in Cathedral Park on Saturday, August 25 from 6:00-10:00 pm. Located underneath the St. John's Bridge, this four-hour outdoor dance is a benefit for Ethos, which is a non-profit organization that fosters music education and appreciation in kids. Tickets will not be sold at the event and can be purchased online at Be the Light. The second event, Dance to the Beach, is happening near my neck of the woods in Manzanita on Friday, September 21 from 8:00-10:00pm. If you need to dance more than two hours, there's a four-hour workshop the following day. See the website for more details about these two events and more. It's a great feeling knowing dance is coming to the beach in more ways than one. Read on to see what's starting up in Cannon Beach on September 6th. What's Up at Playful Spirit? I have to admit I felt a tad bit guilty not writing Lighten Up last month. I've been committed to publishing my newsletter on time and letting go of that responsibility was a big deal to me. You may not have missed it or even noticed I took last month off, but I missed writing and connecting with you. It's good to be back and on track. Many things have happened this summer and I'll be sharing stories of my travels and tribulations on my blog Life of Play. I think I remember what blogs are. It's been awhile since I paid attention to the two I already have and now I'm starting a new one. It's time to end the drought.
One of the things I did this summer was return to the same writer's retreat in Taos, New Mexico that I attended last July. It's kind of funny. After spending a week of writing in the high desert, I returned home to the Pacific Northwest and took a week-long retreat from my writing altogether. Even though I'm still catching up on email, the break was a much-needed one as it gave me time to get clear on what's next. Writing my book,
The Ultimate Yes,
and returning to my blog of the same name is on the front burner and there's more.
What's next is...A friend of mine and I will be facilitating ecstatic dance classes in Cannon Beach beginning in September. Our long-term goal is to build a movement and retreat center along the north Oregon coast. I want to create a place where people can come to relax, rejuvenate and play. This is the latest and greatest dream of mine and I'm delighted to have a business partner who shares the same vision I do.
What else...The fall retreat at the beach has turned into a winter one. Begin Again – A Weekend Sojourn by the Sea will be January 18-20 and will be an intimate gathering for just twelve women. I found two lovely homes here in Cannon Beach that will serve as both the accommodations and retreat space and I've hired an incredible chef to cater all our meals for the weekend. Registration for this event will begin September 1 and an early bird discount will be offered through November 15. For additional details about this event, please visit
Playful Spirit Productions.
If you're interested in being one of the dozen women who will be a part of a magical and memorable weekend this January, don't delay letting me know. Giggles & Guffaws An amusing story, joke, anecdote or picture to tickle your funnybone ![]() A NEW AND IMPROVED GAME OF TWISTER! Ways to Play Today Why not...watch Mother Nature for a moment or two? We're surrounded by the natural world and yet how often do we take the time to really notice the beauty and the beasts? Watch a sunrise or a sunset. Observe birds flying in formation or ants marching on in search of their next picnic. Chase a rainbow or follow the flight of a dragonfly. Gaze at early morning droplets of dew or stare at the light of the moon. Check out the intricate designs of a spider's web or look above and see what you can find hidden in the puffy white clouds. When you need a new perspective, when you feel disconnected and/or alone, get outdoors and get lost in nature's landscapes. Observing the flora and fauna that's right outside your window can be the perfect way to begin or end your day. Hopefully you'll be reminded of how big and beautiful life is and how lucky you get to be a part of it. Why not...move your body in a different way? If you always jump straight out of bed in the morning, stay put and stretch instead. Walk a different pace. Put a little swagger in your stride. Slow down or speed up your exercise routine or bed-time romp. If you always sit straight up in a chair, give slouching a go. We are creatures of comfort and habits are hard to change, but our bodies really do appreciate when we stir or shake things up a bit. Subtle shifts in how we move our physical selves can create tremendous transformation in other areas of our lives. Don't settle for stiff limbs and a scheduled routine. Set new standards for how you move and be amazed not only by how your body begins to feel differently, but how your mind and spirit do, too.
Something to Ponder Questions designed to stimulate your thinking AND encourage you to take action towards what you want.
What prevents you from putting yourself out there and taking more risks? If you want to find out more about the work I do as a facilitator, writer and speaker check out Playful Spirit Productions. Make sure you come back and visit every so often as you never know what kind of resources and fun stuff I'll be playing around with and adding to the website. Thanks for reading this issue of Lighten Up! If you enjoyed it, please pass it along to your friends, your family, your co-workers...You get the idea. May the rest of your summer provide you plenty of opportunities to put yourself out there and practice being vulnerable. Show the world who you really are and the world will show you that anything and everything you want is possible. See you on September 17th! Lisa
